One Year of ErthTech Talent
When I launched this business. It was a tad sooner than I had planned. The reason I decided to pull the trigger was that two mentors on the same day, serendipitously, told me effectively the same thing.
(I’m paraphrasing) ‘You’ve got enough money saved up, what are you waiting for?’
That is what led me to get things rolling in the background.
Not long after, I quit my job and worked towards a proper launch on May 1st, 2024. Keep in mind, my wife and I had recently found out we were expecting. So the stakes were high.
Initially, the excitement was amazing. I went from struggling to find clients in my last company to landing 3 in the first week of business. Mostly because my pricing was more favorable.
Early on, I had a big win. My first deal closed within 2 months of starting. He had signed the offer. Time to celebrate!
Well, not exactly. I should have known better from 4 years in recruitment.
A deal is never really ‘done’. There are so many variables. In this case, the candidate had another offer come through that he felt was better for him. More was promised.
This hurt a lot.
Here I was in my first few months solo, making rookie mistakes.
Well, I kept on going. Landed a retainer. Eventually, did closed a decent-sized deal.
And then out of nowhere, I landed my first RPO with ChargeScape. This would be enough business to keep the lights on through the end of the year. It was just the break and confidence I needed.
Eventually, my wife and I welcomed our firstborn into the world, leading me to have to relearn how to get any work done. Including delivery for my clients. A challenge that is soo worth it.
Fast forward to the start of 2025. I now keep landing more clients than I know what to do with, and am slowly working towards a way of delivering to more clients while keeping costs low for my clients.
There were many times when it felt really hard to keep moving. I was even approached earnestly once with a compelling opportunity to join someone else’s firm. I ended up turning it down — again because a mentor told me I needed to stay focused and put my head down.
He told me the thing I’m building is the type of business a lot of the ‘famous on Twitter’ types wish they had built. This gave me a big confidence boost.
While everyone is out there chasing that AI trend, I’ll be here building a pretty boring business that has really good margins. All the while helping my clients save money and my candidates get new jobs.
